DCA Architects replacement for St John’s Presbyterian Church in Rotorua – which was destroyed by fire in 2017 – presents a bold new idea of what a church building can be. ‘The challenge was to design a church for the future,’ says DCA principal Werner Naudé. ‘We had to re-think how it could meet the congregation’s needs, while allowing non-Christians to feel comfortable when using the building.’

The interior design subtly integrates multiple layers of cultural, religious and historic symbolism, including three vaulted windows modelled on the worship space of the original building. Interior spaces are centred on a community hub which forms the entrance, and features CoralTread entry matting from Advance Flooring.

‘We wanted to create interior spaces with contrast,’ says Naudé, ‘spaces that are light yet dark, large yet intimate, hard yet soft. The use of timber creates soft, warm spaces with crisp, simple lines that are relatable while being robust and low maintenance. Timber linings provide a durable, warm, renewable interior palette that focuses on user well-being.’

Using a polished concrete floor to contrast with this warm materials palette, the hub required a high-performance entry mat that would protect the church interior from water and dirt ingress.

Specifying a large 6.4 sqm CoralTread mat, the architects dramatically reduced the slip risk on the interior floor. With its stylish low-profile aluminium frame and highly absorbent polyamide inserts, CoralTread fits seamlessly with DCA’s aesthetic vision.

CoralTread is manufactured in New Zealand using locally sourced aluminium and is Declare certified, making it an environmentally friendly choice. The polyamide inserts are available in a range of colours and keep looking good while providing optimum dirt and moisture removal.
