Rubber flooring’s performance as a thermal insulator

Rubber is a versatile flooring option that is:

  • Safe
  • Durable
  • stain and moisture resistant
  • Works well in a wide range of environments.
  • Excellent thermal insulator (which is important for indoor applications, both for personal comfort and energy efficiency)

Flooring rubber can be made with a number of different processes and compounds, yet they all result in a similar chemical composition. It’s this composition that directly dictates its thermal properties – it is a product with low thermal conductivity. The tightly-bound electrons in rubber are not free to be shared with the neighbouring atoms; this causes the electrons to slow down, which makes it a great insulator for both electricity and heat.

EPDM rubber is one of the most common compound for rubber flooring, because of its high performance in diverse applications:

  • Commercial interiors
  • Workshops
  • Gym floors

EPDM rubber is a synthetic product with strong with strong abrasion, tear, impact and slip resistance properties. Its low conductivity means it will help keep these spaces both cool in summer and warm in winter.

Rubber flooring will perform at both very low and very high temperatures, and is perfectly compatible with underfloor heating systems. EPDM rubber flooring will also work with HVAC systems to maintain ambient temperatures at their optimum, maximising energy efficiency.

Our rubber products can be fixed to concrete, wood or virtually any other substrate, and will enhance the performance of existing insulation. In addition to its thermal properties, rubber’s natural ‘spring’ and its anti-slip properties make it safe and comfortable underfoot. It can be dyed in a near endless variety of patterns and colourways. This, combined with exceptional durability, wear-resistance and sound absorption makes rubber an ideal flooring solution both physically and aesthetically.

Whether for specialty flooring, such as gym floors, or for multi-use commercial spaces, rubber can provide a surface that will aid in temperature control, look and feel good, even after many years of service.
