All carpet is made up of two parts: a tufted fibre and a backing. Because carpet tiles are modular, they require a stiffer backing than broadloom (carpet that comes in rolls) to give them what is called ‘dimensional stability’.
Dimensional stability is what prevents carpet tiles from stretching, shrinking or twisting. Backing ensures that the carpet tile is technically sound and maintains the necessary form. The backing will also contribute to sound absorption and warmth, and provide comfort underfoot. A range of backing types are available.
In most cases, the carpet fibre is tufted into a non-woven polyester to make it dimensionally stable and resilient. This is then bonded to a backing layer made from PVC, bitumen, thermoplastic compounds, or a cushion backing often made from recycled drink bottles. The thicker cushion backing provides more comfort.

EcoBack
EcoBack is a lightweight thermoplastic backing that has been developed as an alternative to what traditionally would have been PVC backing. As the name suggests, EcoBack’s PVC-free construction means it has good environmental accreditation while maintaining strong performance and good dimensional stability. (EcoBack has also proved popular with installers, as it is easy on the back.)
ComfortBack
ComfortBack is manufactured from recycled PET drink bottles for sustainability. The extra thickness means greater sound absorption and thermal performance for warmer, quieter environments and increased comfort underfoot.
ComfortBack tiles are often specified for education and childcare applications, and in commercial spaces seeking a plusher, warmer finish. Note that ComfortBack is available in a range of different backing weights, with performance varying accordingly.
BitBack
This bitumen backing is a very popular option on tiles manufactured in Europe, which moved away from PVC backing many years ago and saw bitumen as more environmentally friendly. BitBack consists of 70 per cent recycled materials, and performs well while being a cost-effective option.
EcoLite
EcoLite is an extra-light PVC backing which reduces environmental impact and makes the carpet tile lighter, which is an important consideration for the health and safety of installers. Costs are also reduced, making EcoLite a good budget option.
The most important consideration when choose a carpet tile backing is the type of performance required.
