Warkworth School
In a major redevelopment at Rodney’s Warkworth School, Ignite Architects brought colour, aesthetics and innovation to the Junior Campus’s new two-storey teaching block. To help create the best possible learning environment for young students, the architects selected commercial carpet tiles from Advance Flooring.
Replacing an entire campus of classrooms, the award-winning facility houses an administration building, locker rooms, a library, music rooms, and 14 teaching spaces, and is designed to accommodate future roll growth at the 600-pupil school.
Working to Ministry of Education guidelines for soft floorings, the architects chose an Advance carpet tile range for the teaching spaces, library and music room. The tile offers 27dB of noise reduction, even without an acoustic backing, making it ideal for the open teaching areas as well as the acoustically treated music suite.
The MoE stipulates that carpet tiles be colour-fast and fade resistant, and with a ‘reasonably long-standing style and pattern to support ongoing maintenance’. To achieve this, the designers specified a seamless base of light grey. They then incorporated highlights of dark and light blue to define smaller spaces within the building’s open-plan interior, while at the same time connecting it to the colourful exterior.
The tile range features heavy-duty carpet made from 100% solution-dyed polyamide fibre, with a backing of 100% recycled PVC. With great acoustic and thermal properties, it is ideal for learning environments, while its ability to trap dust and other airborne contaminants makes it safer also.
The Warkworth School facility was awarded Gold at the 2022 New Zealand Commercial Project Awards, which recognises the contribution and innovation of a development’s whole project team.
