When converting a block of three classrooms into vibrant, shared learning spaces, DLM Architects chose Kingston carpet tiles for their colour, comfort and acoustic qualities. And collaborating with Advance Flooring on the visual design meant they got a great looking result, along with a streamlined installation process.

At Prospect School in Glen Eden a new multi-zone classroom refurbishment had to create a learning environment where primary school children could be comfortable and creative.

‘Acoustics was a key aspect to get right,’ says Tatiana Zimina of DLM. Because the space had to be open and flexible for different groups and different activities, ‘an acoustic floor was important’.

Kingston carpet tiles have been specifically designed for education environments, and with the standard comfort-backing provide 26dB in sound reduction.

‘Kingston had additional properties for the comfort,’ says Tatiana. ‘It has the acoustic felt backing which you don’t normally get. And the colours worked well. We really liked the blue.’

The school’s official colours are bright green, blue and purple, so those were incorporated throughout. ‘We looked for colours to balance those, and it was the silver grey in the walls and the floor. In each room there is one area where the blue is used where students sit down, and everywhere else is a mix of two greys.’

The flooring design uses Kingston’s square tiles in a ‘pixelated’ pattern. Treating each tile as a pixel, the organic pattern was a collaboration between DLM and Advance. ‘Advance produced an initial visual that we made amendments to,’ says Tatiana. This approach also made the installation process more efficient. ‘They provide the pattern layout for the installer, which gets included in the construction documentation.’

All Kingston tiles are stocked in New Zealand for rapid despatch.

For the transition area between inside and out, DecoRIB entrance carpet was used in front of a set of sliding doors out to the new covered deck. ‘We chose the Storm colour to blend in well and be seamless with the dark grey tile of the Kingston.’
