EverTread entry matting protects an innovative, community-centred shopping complex.

The new Ormiston Town Centre in south-east Auckland – designed by architects Jasmax and Melbourne civic planners NH Architecture – is unlike a conventional mall, the shopping complex is laid out along a traditional main street format, with arcades and laneways. This is complemented by a range of public open spaces that link to the adjoining Barry Curtis Park, which surrounds the development on three sides.

The 40,000m² development features retail stores, restaurants, movie theatres, a gym, and future developments in design to further enhance the area. With its many thresholds, the safe, efficient flow of people between exterior and interior spaces is fundamental. To help manage this, the architects selected EverTread entry matting from Advance Flooring.

EverTread is the ideal solution for high-traffic applications. It is manufactured with continuous anodised aluminium interlocking strips, moulded anti-clatter feet, and heavy-duty polyamide carpet inserts. The polyamide inserts have a 17mm profile designed to withstand both extreme levels of foot traffic and rolling loads such as shopping trolleys.

In public spaces such as shopping malls, safety is a primary concern. EverTread provides excellent slip resistance, mitigating the risk of injury from slips and falls. In slip tests, the polyamide inserts exceeded both New Zealand and Australian standards. EverTread also exceeds fire safety requirements.

Polyamide fibre’s mix of fine yarn piles for moisture absorption and thick, monofilament piles to scrape off solid particles makes it the superior choice for entry matting. The fibres spring back after pressure, which means the weave stays open, allowing dirt to be more easily removed during cleaning. EverTread's fully interlocking aluminium base eliminates additional moisture.

For Ormiston Town Centre, the full-width EverTread entrance mats extend 3m from the entry doors. Jasmax selected polyamide Black from the range of eight colours, creating a dramatic contrast with the complex’s stone flooring, and protecting both the building and its visitors.
