Seamless flooring for Nelson gateway

The new terminal for Nelson Airport provides a stunning gateway experience to the region. CoralTread entry matting features at the main entries, colour-matched between the bluestone paving and interior dark grey carpet.

Designed by Studio Pacific Architecture, the building features an innovative and dynamic folding roof structure. A showcase for the local timber industry, and abstract reference to surrounding mountain ranges, the building is contextual, sustainable, and resilient in an earthquake.

‘For people entering the terminal, there is an opportunity to celebrate the building and its context with immediate views to the apron and airplanes, and also long views to the surrounding landscape,’ says project architect Simon Hardy. ‘It has a paired back material palette contrasting the warm, honey colour of the timber against the dark floor and structural componentry.’

The geometries of the exposed roof structure are mirrored at small scale in the herringbone blue basalt, carpet tiles and lines of the CoralTread entrance matting. All in matching grey – including black anodised aluminium CoralTread – the flooring provides a dark and grounded horizontal plane in contrast with the cathedral-like space above.

The public approach to the terminal is across the blue basalt footpath and through framed entry portals. Once inside, CoralTread entry matting provides a robust flooring solution for the transition zone.

Manufactured in New Zealand, CoralTread provides a safe, non-slip surface that traps dirt and absorbs moisture while blending seamlessly with other design elements: for the Nelson terminal building, its solid, recessive colour perfectly complements the lighter timber detailing above.
