With a programme based around Pasifika concepts of wellness and a fitout that draws on modern Korean design, Auckland’s boutique State of Health gym brings a point of difference to health and wellbeing.

For designers Edge Interiors, Advance Flooring gym and carpet tiles added practicality and convenience to the project.

‘The brief was not to treat it like the average commercial gym space,’ says Lera Bykova from Edge Interiors. ‘Because the client wanted something different, I looked to Korean interior design for inspiration.’

Korean design is above all practical, honed from making creative use of limited space and operating on the principle that less is more. ‘In Korean interior designs they’re using different building materials as a feature,’ says Bykova. ‘Such as utilising steel studs in the design, or recycling building materials into the furniture.’

That principle meant using easy, cost-effective NZ stock commercial flooring from Advance, in the form of Cityscape Atlanta carpet tiles in dark grey and black Premium Gym Tiles.

‘As well as the look, one of our main considerations for the flooring was maintenance,’ says Bykova. ‘People tend to sweat in the gym, and drop weights, too, so in the weight area we wanted a floor that was easy to maintain and easy to wipe down.’

‘We had some budget constraints on this project,’ says Bykova, ‘and with Advance Flooring products we were able to create a healthy, safe and unique environment for people to use.’
