A rotating door to bring the outside in

Located in central Auckland, neighbouring the New Zealand International Convention Centre, Sky City’s Horizon Hotel features Advance Flooring’s CoralTreadentrance matting as one of its finishing touches.

Designed by Moller Architects in association with Warren and Mahoney, the 300-room, five-star hotel boasts a revolving doorway entrance to the main lobby and reception. CoralTread entrance matting is fitted within the circular door frame, extending outside the perimeter of the building as well as inside the lobby. The design seeks to maximise the removal of dirt and moisture at the entrance, helping to keep the interior clean and safe from slips.

‘It’s a unique design, in the way that the circular wind lobby creates the transition between exterior and interior,’ says Advance Product Manager Adam Butler. ’That the install happened so long after the initial consultation, design and specification is testament to how well the specification process works through the MasterSpec platform and documentation.’

Bringing together all the elements seamlessly

Creating unique entranceways, such as in the Horizon Hotel, is a collaborative process between the architects and Advance Flooring, ensuring that every element – design, installation and performance – comes together seamlessly.

‘We work with specifiers to make sure that the entrance mat is sized correctly and fit for purpose to provide safety for the users entering the building,’ says Adam, ‘and also to protect the surrounding flooring and the flooring that the entrance mat leads onto.’

CoralTread entrance matting has been developed over 30 years to provide heavy-duty performance for high traffic entranceways, while bringing the kind of elegance required by luxury hotels like the Horizon. Manufactured in New Zealand, it can be delivered and installed with very short lead times. And at the end-of-life, we take back our mats for recycling.

Timely delivery makes up for a long delay

The unanticipated delays in completing construction of the hotel magnified the potential for problems in the final installation of the entrance matting. However, the combination of Advance’s experience and the tested nature of their process —from architectural drawings to on-site measurements to manufacture and installation —ensured a timely, high-quality outcome.

‘Even when construction is going smoothly, it's often left to the last minute,’ says Adam, ‘and we get a call to manufacture and install very swiftly. As a New Zealand custom manufacturer, we can make that happen within a very short lead time.’
