Future-proofing the needs of a new transit interchange with Orbit entry matting

Formerly a small suburban railway station, South Auckland’s Puhinui Station has undergone a $69 million development that has transformed it into a state-of-the-art rapid transit interchange – and a stunning architectural landmark.

Designed by by Jasmax, the station has been future-proofed to allow for additional platforms and KiwiRail’s third and fourth rail lines. The rail network’s increased capacity could enable up to 30 million passenger journeys per year – more than 80,000 a day.

As a transit zone for Auckland Airport, Puhinui Station will see thousands of these passengers pass under the dramatic curve of its sculptural, timber-lined ceiling. The selection of Orbit entry matting for all of the entranceways serves to reduce the effects of tracked-in dirt and moisture, helping to preserve the interior and keep passengers safe.

Orbit is a stylish and practical aluminium and carpet strip matting system that has been developed to offer a choice of polyamide or polypropylene carpet inserts. Designed to both trap dirt and absorb and wick away moisture, these inserts are set in a low-profile aluminium frame that can be rolled up and removed for easy cleaning.

Around 80% of dirt and moisture entering a building comes in on the soles of shoes, and at passenger facilities, this ingress is further increased with large volumes of rolling luggage. At Puhinui Station, Orbit entry matting is in place to keep interior floors clean and passengers safe for many years to come.
