Made from Mongolian cashmere goat hair, Tretford takes what was once a waste product and turns it into a soft yet incredibly durable carpet. And because it is hair, not wool, virtually no chemicals are used in its processing.
Ethically harvested materials, sustainably manufactured
The cashmere goat is an integral part of Mongolian culture, and while its fine hair is used to make luxury products, the coarser face fibre is usually discarded. Tretford takes this longer, stiffer fibre and weaves it into incredibly durable, surprisingly soft, naturally anti-static carpet.
Goat hair is a rapidly renewable resource, and Tretford supports the Mongolian cashmere goat industry by including up to 80% of the fibre in their carpets. The hair is simply brushed out, and no animals are harmed in the harvesting process.
The carpets themselves are made without industrial chemicals, and with no waste. Fibres are washed using only soap and water, with no scouring or bleaching. Tretford also developed a unique felting process, and the fibres are woven into loops, not tufted, then pushed into a backing which gives the carpet its signature ridges.
Cashmere is naturally anti-static, so there is no need for anti-static treatments to change the electrostatic charge.
The many benefits of natural materials
Tretford doesn’t have a high loft like some other carpets, which makes it very durable. It’s rated for heavy commercial use, making it an ideal choice for environments with a lot of foot traffic. While it has been used in residential projects, Tretford’s main strength is in commercial spaces, such as offices or public areas.
In addition, the fibres are hygroscopic, naturally absorbing moisture from the air. This helps maintain optimal moisture levels in a room, preventing dampness and condensation from settling, and creating a more comfortable, balanced environment for workplaces and classrooms.
Or course, none of this would matter if Tretford carpets didn’t look great, and one of the things that sets the Tretford range apart is its rich colour palette, which includes four completely natural shades with no dyes. These colours come from the natural grading of the cashmere goat fibre, adding an element of authenticity. For the dyed colours, the pigments used meet the high European environmental requirements.
Tretford carpets are available in rolls, tiles and rugs. They combine true sustainability with practical design, offering long-lasting durability and unique environmental benefits for any commercial application.
