Pamela, what's your background?
I’ve been in the flooring industry for over 20 years, and it still excites me. I started at Carpet Court, shadowing the installers, measuring and quoting (it was all done by hand in those days!), and helping clients with colour choices and selecting what would fit with the architecture of their homes.
It was a great, hands-on introduction to the industry. And, importantly, I could go back after the install and see the difference it made to people’s homes.
After that, I moved into commercial flooring where designers had more freedom with colour and design. It really opened my eyes to the design talent and the possibilities within the field.
What does your role as Architectural Consultant involve?
I’m the conduit between the designer’s vision and our products. I love listening to a designer’s vision for a particular space and finding product options that align with that vision.
I also work closely with our Technical Manager to ensure that the products we recommend comply with building code requirements and meet the needs of the project—everything from acoustic values to safety considerations. Additionally, I support logistics to ensure the product is available when installers need it.
Are there any types of projects you particularly enjoy working on?
Every project is unique, but there are some areas that I have a personal connection with. For example, I believe providing fun, warm and inviting learning spaces where children want to be enhances their ability to learn.
My personal experience of loved ones with dementia cemented my passion for Evidence Based Design and creating aged care spaces that are safe, friendly and comforting. I think when you've lived a long life, the last part of it should be as beautiful and nurturing as possible.
I’m also passionate about environmental responsibility and choosing materials that are safe, healthy, long-lasting and can be repurposed or recycled at the end of their life. For example, I’m very proud of our Kinetex range which sets a new standard for product stewardship.
You’re involved in a wide range of projects—what trends are you seeing emerge?
One trend I’ve noticed post-Covid is that office spaces are becoming more ‘homelike’ and welcoming. For example, designers are using colours that are gentler and more relaxing.
I’m also excited seeing designers diving deeper into the identity of each company—who they are and what they stand for—and finding ways to reflect that in their workspace to attract talent.
What do enjoy about being part of the Advance Flooring team?
I joined Advance at the start of this year (2024) but they’ve been on my radar for a long time. Back when they were ‘the competition’ or a supplier, I thought, ‘wow, these guys are good.’ I’m thrilled to be part of such a great team and a great business.
Working at Advance is a collaborative process. And once the goal is decided, there’s a real laser focus on achieving it. It’s very special and I feel blessed to be a part of it.
