Cheshire Architects selected natural coir for The Hotel Britomart in central Auckland, where the large mat is shaped organically to mimic the boulders on the adjacent laneway, with a colour and texture that complement all the other natural materials in the space.
‘It’s the same colour as a natural jute rug,’ says designer Daijang Tai, ‘and it feels as if you are walking on dried grass, with a colour and texture that complement all the other natural materials in the space.’
Strong, safe and wheelchair compliant
At 17mm thick, Duratap is both durable and highly absorbent – it can absorb up to eight litres of water per square metre – while its stiff bristles easily trap dirt.
Duratap yarn is machine spun for a uniform, regular pattern with minimum fibre loss. Backed with a unique fibreglass scrim, Duratap is virtually stretch-free and very stable. The mat is suitable for wheelchair users and easily accessible for people on crutches or high heels.
Natural variations in the yarn give the mat beautiful colour gradients in both coir and charcoal, and as a natural product it gets better over time. Says Daijang Tai, ‘The coir matting looks even better as it ages. It’s been a year since it was installed, and it still looks spectacular.’
