Entrance carpet for an integrated look
The luxury Betts Apartments in Nelson feature two glazed stair and lift towers finished with the 100 per cent recycled yarn content of Zeno Protect carpet for acoustic dampening and durability.
Part of a high-density housing strategy in the city centre, 17 luxury apartments now grace the site of what was previously an open car park. ‘The council want to intensify and reinvigorate the city centre with more residential units,’ says architect and design director Jorgen Andersen. ‘And with more people in or close to town, we reduce our reliance on cars.’
With a sustainable and urban focus, the apartments are designed for owner-occupiers. ‘Two separate entry points on the west and south elevations provide courtyard, lift and stair access,’ says Jorgen. ‘By reducing the requirement for corridor access, apartment sizes have been maximised and, in most cases, run right through from north to south or east to west, optimising sun, light, natural ventilation and views.’
The twin stairwells and interior circulation paths needed a complementary, low-maintenance floor to wick water off people’s shoes. Instead of a matwell and carpet tiles, the architects chose one single material – the 100 per cent recycled yarn of Zeno Protect Excellence for its green credentials, durability and practicality, and for an integrated look on the landings, stair treads and inside the lifts.
The yarn in Zeno Protect Excellence collection from Advance is made entirely of 100 per cent regenerated ECONYL® nylon, a yarn made of post-consumer and post-industrial waste, including a high component of old fishing nets. ECONYL nylon products are sustainable, dirt and moisture absorbent, anti-slip and fireproof, and they save on maintenance costs. Zeno Protect uses a combination of coarse and fine filaments to effectively brush shoes clean.
The carpet also dampens sound to reduce ambient noise as people move between the street, courtyard and basement car park to the private apartments.
Zeno Protect Excellence is an extra-heavy-duty entrance carpet system that is super water-absorbent, absorbing over five litres of water per square metre and stopping up to 90 per cent of dirt and moisture within six metres of the entry. Yarn made from 100 per cent recycled polyamide (largely from fishing nets), with a phthalate-free backing, it is produced utilising solar energy, all of which makes this an environmentally conscious entry carpet option.
